Good Health, Good Food, Good Habits!

We already looked at immortality. We have seen that in the future, we will be better nourished, better physically and ultimately blessed with incredible longevity.

In order to get there, we need to keep changing our eating habits and our activities, if they indeed need changing. The latest series of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” would indicate that with the heaviest youngest men weighing in at 454 pounds and only 19 years old, we should have some cause for concern! Now the show does not get into the psychological or medical reasons for the contestants getting this way in the first place. It concentrates entirely on the competitive weight loss and the really hard journey it requires to get there.

Take a look around! In the entire world, nobody is as heavy as us Americans! Actually, there are a couple of Samoan brothers on the show, and that nation probably comes close to the American standard in terms of weight gain because of their lifestyle.

How much more do we have to be reminded that we will die early, show our age earlier, or in the very least, not enjoy our life so much, if we had not taken care of our health earlier on in life. However, as Oprah Winfrey and Dr Mehmet Oz, the famous Turkish American surgeon from NYC, explained on an Oprah show recently, there are things that can be done to reverse this aging process.

Indeed, people have appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and have had their biological age revealed by a series of tests which prove that if you smoke, eat unhealthy, and do not do even the most minimal exercise, your physical age of say 41, would really stack up in life-expectancy as the age of 63! Most participants who were told this, broke down in tears and promised to make radical changes, which they did. (Later on, they would be invited back to the show to reveal the effects of their work, changing their lifestyle with Dr Oz and Dr Roizen. The bottom line was that they were not only able to reverse the negative aging process, but also able to regain a few years into the bargain. One 45 year-old was told that with her current diet and exercise regimen and her commitment to a changed lifestyle had knocked 4 years off her life, bringing it back down to 41! Certainly, she looked physically amazing. There was a glow about her skin and a bounce in her personality as she walked proudly back on to the stage after her transformation.

We can all do this. We need to take some measurements of vital health signs and get some metrics from our blood work. We need to measure good and bad cholesterol, blood pressure and other blood biochemicals. We need to find a doctor who suits us and we also may need to adjust our eating habits. As a general rule of thumb, trans fats and animal fats are bad for us. Fish is generally good. Obviously, deep-fried food will not be conducive to a healthy heart because an artery can be blocked by a clot caused by this type of food. And most importantly, we need to begin the minimal amount of physical exercise, which could even be walking stairs rather than using an elevator. At least just a walk every day would make a difference. Other, more subtle things like giving up white flour and sugar, milk with any fat in it, or even giving up cow’s milk altogether in favor of soy milk, will definitely help us live longer. Lastly, we need what Oprah and Dr Oz refer to as a “health advocate” – really someone who will take part in the transformation and monitor our progress with diligence and consistency. If we fall off the wagon, they are the people who can pick us back up again.

There has been an influx of these great new reality programs on television just lately, and along with the award-winning shows like NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”, we have plenty of support to help us become the definitive nation for health and well-being. Certainly, America is no stranger to the concept of getting fit and doing well. Just think back to the Beijing Olympics at the end of the Summer last year. Did we not do well?

Psychologically, we are going through a very difficult time in America. Our nation came to the brink of financial collapse. We have seen the worst recession take place in our financial markets and everywhere people are having to cut back. Many companies are making employees take compulsory vacation with no pay and cutting back wages and salaries by between 6 and 10%. Most people are really feeling this pinch and there is very little of what we can regard as “disposable” income left for enjoyment. What is worse is that folk everywhere are being laid off and this is meaning that more people are looking for an ever-decreasing supply of jobs. we hope that President-Elect Barack Obama will move swiftly to create a few million new jobs to get everyone back working again. Until then, it will be a very difficult time for a lot of people.

We need to look everywhere for the positive efforts of people to stay happy. We need to be focused on the real pursuit of happiness. And above all we must realize that it will ultimately be down to us to effect a change back to a more healthy emotional well-being. Nobody else can do this for us.

The only way to look at all of this is to regard it as being a great opportunity to take the recession and all that it brings with it by the horns and do what we can to help each other and make the world a better place. This is entirely possible and we can all do it!

Until next time… 🙂
